ILLUMINATE
- Through providing students with intellectually challenging classrooms and pedagogical experiences integrated with ICT they have opportunities to explicitly critically and creatively evaluate the processes involved.
- Allowing opportunities for experimentation, practice, supported learning and transformed learning through ICT, students can clearly see the links between technologies, their role and the learning process.
- Ensuring our students are fluent in the 21st century is not just about being fluent in literacy, it entails being media fluent, technologically fluent in additional to literate.
- A recent report (see Lenhart, Arafeh, Smith, & Macgill, 2008) indicates that young people also find it difficult to see relationships between their home and school digital literacy practices. It found that even though young people were “embedded in a tech- rich world” (p. ii), they did not regard their expertise in email, instant and text messaging – “the material they create electronically” (p. i) – as “real” writing.
- Bridging the gap between the home and school and understanding how the digital literacies in students' virtual school bags (Thomson, 2002) might be used combined with a mapping of how learning can build on what student's already know about digital literacies is a critical place to start.
Time to let the students see real life applications.
ILLUMINATION!
Seeing connections to real life applications is important for students. It creates interest, transfer of learning and intrinsic motivation when they are participants in the learning journey.
RESOURCES
Fluency
From the simple to the more complex and developing fluency in year 2 students literacy skills is essential for successful reading and comprehension. Quick Voice, (an Ipad app) enables students to record themselves reading and then playback. Doing this in pairs allows for peers feedback and keeping a record of their progress enables them to concretely see their development and improvement.
